Johnnie, I would challenge you to rethink your view on cherishing character. Jesus often associated with people who didn’t necessarily currently fit the mold of a person with good character. Some specific instances come to mind including the adulteress at the well in John 8, then again in Mark 2:15, Mark says, “Now it happened, as He was dining in Levi’s house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many and they followed Him.” When Jesus heard about it in verse 17, He said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”
