For instance, if a client comes into shelter and has a severe mental illness, the Montgomery County Women’s Center is not medically equipped to provide the appropriate care so they are referred to Tri-County where mental health professionals can assist them. An outreach worker from Tri-County also comes to the shelter once a week to speak with any clients interested in mental health services. Their mission is “to service and safeguard all persons in Montgomery County by working cooperatively with the community to ensure the quality of life for all through effective, efficient, and professional delivery of law enforcement services” (T. Young, personal communication, March 16, 2016). The sheriff is the head of the agency followed by the chief deputy, then the captains, lieutenants, sergeants, corporals, deputies, and finally the civilians. They receive a vast majority of their funds through the commissioner’s court, however they also receive funds through grants, state funds, federal funds, and search and seizures. Services that the Sheriff’s Office provides to victims of elder abuse include assistance with Crime Victim’s Compensation, help with filing police reports, guidance through the criminal justice system, and assistance with VINE, which stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday. They also conduct welfare checks if a family member is concerned about one of their clients and accompany clients to the District Attorney’s office. Services may last anywhere from a few days to all the way through the parole process and services can be terminated for several reasons including the client’s offender going to prison, the client refusing services, or the client’s case is sent to the District
