This paper will identify an intervention to reduce adult obesity in the United States. The World Health Organization considers obesity an epidemic. Over 34% of adults in the United States are classified as obese, placing them at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes (Specchia et al., 2014). Unlike so many other grave diseases, obesity is a preventable condition (CDC, 2010, p. 951). According to Healthy People 2020, America has experienced this dramatic increase in adult obesity because Americans do not eat a healthy diet and do not get enough physical activity (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2016). In 2008, Healthy People 2020 introduced the leading health indicator NWS-9 Reduce the proportion of adults who are obese. The increased risk obesity places on the health of the overall health of the population have made an important focus area of current nursing practice.
This intervention will focus on obese adults in San Luis Obispo County between the ages of 55 to 64 year-old. Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) > to 30 kg/m2 (Thorpe & Yang, 2011). The rate of obesity for 55 to 64 year-olds was 43.4% in 2013-2014, well above the overall average of 37.7% (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2016). Thorpe and Yang (2011) identified that Medicare could save between $7 and $15 billion over the following 10 years, if adults between 60-64 years old who are at risk for cardiovascular disease or diabetes participated in community-based weight loss…
