Adult Nursing Personal Statement

Over the past year I have studied health and social care and it has given me an insight into the vast areas of healthcare and nursing has stood out. I have spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals as my grandmother by law Sylvia who’s a 73 year old diabetic is close to me. After a lot of time with Sylvia visiting her in hospital and understanding all the different illnesses that she has, learning about all the different types of medications. Different health visitors, doctors, nurses and HCAs; learning about insulin and assisting her in taking her blood sugar. She’s also in respiratory failure and on a ventilation mask which I have learnt to set up. Now on critical care Sylvia needs the assistance of community carers and frequent visits …show more content…
Adult nursing stands out more to me because I would like to specifically work with either cancer patients as I believe that this is a delicate and sensitive time for people when receiving medical care making me want to help people on an emotional and physical level or being a part of the medical team with the British army. For the past 3 months I have worked in Primark. Learning a lot and building up people skills that will be useful to my chosen career. Having clear and effective communication is important because of the diverse people that come in from all over the world to store for clothes as it’s in the city centre. I not only help people from all different backgrounds but work with many too developing my communication skills because I can ask them about their lives and experiences, education and work themselves which is similar to my unit two on diversity, equality and rights and unit one on effective communication. Working there gives me the opportunity to observe different and difficult situations. For example a woman came to breast feed her child so I was asked to wait outside the restroom while she did and she refused to go in and sat on the stairway so alternatively instead of her feeling uncomfortable I offered her the breastfeeding chair out of the toilet so she didn’t have to sit on the stairs with strange looks from
