In Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning Christina Haas and Linda Flower target experienced and inexperienced readers with the intention of extending the constructive, rhetorical view of reading to share with others, and therefore helping them to become better writers. By studying the thinking strategies of experienced readers at Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for the Study of Writing using a ‘thinking aloud’ method, Haas and Flower were able to see a correlation between strong reading ability and strong writing ability: rooted in comprehension. In order to prepare for writing a summary of Joseph Harris’s “Revising”, I first felt it was necessary to skim through the article once again to refresh my memory of the article. After re-reading the article, I tried to identify the main idea that Harris was trying to communicate. I believed that the main point could be identified through Harris’s emphasis on the fact that revising is not just correcting grammatical errors, but rather seeking out these errors was a part of a larger whole. Mary Beth Stevens suggests writing supports reading by asking students to draw upon common knowledge and thinking processes (2014). While making changes to the text I implemented specific strategies suggested by the report. Those strategies include: distinguishing academic language from everyday vocabulary, contextualizing vocabulary instruction, and contextualizing through familiarity with genre and structure. As demonstrated by both Peter Elbow and Donald Murray, an author’s approach to writing a piece, whether it is written freely or structured, changes the perspective the reader will take. The different methods followed to achieve their style will depend on the purpose of each writer’s piece. The pieces “Freewriting”, by Peter Elbow, and “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscript”, by Donald M. Murray, both discuss how to create competent writing; however, Elbow sees writing primarily as a process, whereas Murray sees it as a tool for achieving an end product. This course has improved my reading, writing and research skills to the point that I now have some skills in the area. Through making me pay close attention to all of the little details that I would normally not notice, my reading skills have improved to allow me to find important information within the text that I would normally not notice. I’ve improved my writing skills by becoming aware of the vocabulary and grammar that I would use within an essay. My research skills have gone from non-existent to knowing something about it.…
