Responsibility over your education
Claiming an education is easier said than done and as you grow older you begin to realize how responsible you are over your own education. In Adrienne Rich’s essay, “Claiming an Education,” she makes an argument about responsibility for all students. In her opinion it is important, within the educational community, to truly take control over our own education. That is to say, you as a student has to be engage with what is being taught to you. Rich states, “Being here to receive an education; you will do much better to think of yourselves as being here to claim one.” (608) Many people are mistaken when they blame teachers for the grade they received and in all honesty education is what you make it. As a matter of fact I failed every research paper that was ever assigned to me. At the peak of it all, the last semester my junior year I had to put together a research paper about the writing of Macbeth. This did not seem so hard to put together at first. Until, I actually had to start writing and getting information. This turned out to be one of my worse essays which kept me at a C for the semester. I could not figure out exactly what I was doing wrong in terms of writing an A paper. Many of my previous english teachers were willing to assist me in writing this paper. Also, I reread all the material I needed to know before starting this project. However, I still had a hard time organizing my thoughts on the piece of paper in the format that would be pleasing to my teacher. Unfortunately, I did not realize where I went wrong till after I handed in my paper. Instead of listening to the teacher during class and participating in class discussions, I decided to sleep and figure everything out on my own at home. This is the exact opposite of what pratt describes as claiming an education. I was what rich describe as receiving an education instead of taking it as the “Rightful …show more content…
For example, being involved in class discussions, staying focused, and challenging yourself to learn something new. Not just take the easy way out just because you are familiar with it. You have to challenge yourself to take those hard classes and be successful in them. Everyone is responsible for their education, thus your education successfulness is what you make it. In other words you learn what you want to learn and as a reflection of your efforts you will be placed in society where you fit in. An education is not in your possession if you are just receiving it. “The difference is that between acting and being acted-upon.” says rich. (608) Women in particular are faced with the odds stacked against them, however it is still our responsibility to have possession of our education. Thus, it is everyone’s responsibility to claim an

I also had fallen into becoming a procrastinator my second semester of college. Pushing my homework and assignments off was one of the biggest mistakes I have made throughout my first year of college. Once I started this course, I was still in the horrible habit of pushing my responsibilities off, but after my first essay was completed, I soon realized that my professor was not going to tolerate. The way the class went was, either you do the assignments or you do not get a grade at all.…

I was afraid when having an english class in college, the professor would point me out or give negative comments about my writing. My goal was to write a paper so my professor would be impressed. From this class I wanted to achieve self confidence about my writing and learn more about the sentence structure. The way I started to draft my papers this semester was different to the way I was drafting in the past. For my previous papers…

When it comes to writing about things that don't come from inside me, I feel hopeless. For example, during the research essay I struggled to display all the information I required without sounding like a broken record. I often am at a loss when it comes to writing in this academic form of writing, I personally just think it’s boring. During the research essay, I constantly stumbled upon piles and piles of information, not knowing what to choose. Looking back on this piece there is a clear comment that Professor Goddard made “As you work on future papers, even beyond this class, keep working on tightening the focus of the paper.…

It was interesting because during my junior year, I had this rebellion and had a really hard time with ‘the system’. My friends were learning totally different things in their ‘regular’ classes than I was in my honors and they were getting away with doing really quite mediocre work. Their teachers taught out of textbooks and their assignments were out of the books. I started thinking how pointless it was that I was doing all this work only to be getting a better GPA but ending up at the same schools as people because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to afford to go to a better…

One thing about teaching other how to write is letting them write about a topic that they are passionate about. When I was in high school our writing was very structured… outline, rough draft, and finally our final essay. I don’t believe that is the way writing should be. The reason I believe writing should be taught like that comes straight from personal experience. When I was forced to write so organized; which can be very helpful but I didn’t feel it was helpful in this setting; in my senior English class, I didn’t thrive.…

It was when I wasn 't expecting to learn that I learned the most. It started when middle school was ending and preparation for high school English began. Reading or writing outside of school, usually, comes naturally to me; there is no over thinking involved. However, at school, I could not write a single sentence without struggling and double checking it to make sure the flow was right. I suppose it was the pressure of knowing my writing was being graded that made me ensure it was “perfect.” It could also be that I was not as comfortable writing in school as I was at home.…

My defining class For many students middle school is a great time, but my middle school experience was ruined very quickly. For many students middle school is a time where many students are able to grow, find out what their interests are, learn, and become social. But in my case it was more about me dreading everyday having to wake up and go to school. My first experience with middle school was a very confusing time for me, and unfortunately I was mistakenly placed into a writing support class. At the start of middle school, I was forced into a writing support class, this lead to me having low self-esteem, becoming insecure about my schoolwork, and a dislike towards criticism.…

As the class progressed I learned to actually enjoy writing and researching more. I thought it would be another writing course with boring prompts and no challenge leading me to hate and dread this class similar to high school, but I was wrong. In this semester alone I learned more about my writing style, mechanics, structure, heading, organizing and sourcing than I had previously in my high school career.Teacher in high school just does not do a sufficient job at teaching the mechanics of writing. This being said I did not earn the grades I wanted, but I learned from all my mistakes as I wrote each paper it became slightly better. I realized that with each paper my grade increased slightly.…
