Adrienne Rich Claiming An Education Summary

Improved Essays
Adrienne Rich, a feminist, gave a speech to the students of Douglas College at their convocation in 1977 called “Claiming an Education”. As you read the speech, you may see that she generally targeted it towards women, but everybody regardless of gender can learn from her speech, she writes, “The first thing I want to say to you who are students, is that you cannot afford to think of being here to receive an education; you will do much better to think of yourselves as being here to claim one.” (608). I believe she means thinking that you’re going to school because you have to and acting as if you have to get this education is not successful thinking. You should rather have the mindset that you are taking ownership of your education. I learned …show more content…
It means that the student sees herself engaged with her teachers in an active, ongoing struggle for a real education. (611)
In order to be a claimer and take responsibility she explains that you need to be proactive in getting help when needed. Push yourself, take on some challenges and then you can truly show people what you’re capable of. Also, whatever you don’t give your all to, whatever grade you get is on you, take responsibility for that because nobody got that grade but

When I didn’t put in effort, I still came out with C’s and B’s. When I did get a bad grade sometimes I didn’t take responsibility for it, I blamed the teacher’s teaching method. Anyways, I still assumed this was fine and I was still going to be rich when I got older. Reality hit when I started my 11th grade year. In both of my dual enrollment classes, not giving effort was not cutting it anymore. Although, that truly didn’t sink in and marinate until the 2nd quarter. Before all my outlines in Writing 101 were very basic, my outlines didn’t have enough information so when I actually got to typing my paper, I got stuck a lot because I didn’t know what to type. I was lazy and just trying to rush and get it over with. Now, my notes and outlines comes out to be four pages at least. I’m in the making of soon being able to call myself a “claimer”. I started asking my teacher about more clarification in our readings and I put more time and effort into my essays. Although, I still have essays that are left unfinished and the semester is coming to a close so I’m not a “claimer” just yet. Also, I still have to work on what I call my “receiver” tendencies, such as procrastinating and waiting until the last minute to work on stuff. Also, I’m not good at having my priorities straight. I still believe that as this school year goes on I’m getting closer and closer to claiming my education. I want to develop the habits of a “claimer” so

In "The Danger of Telling Poor Kids That College Is the Key to Social Mobility" posted on The Atlantic on January 16, 2014, writer and teacher Andrew Simmons states his thoughts and ideas about higher education to the impoverished population and why it isn 't for poor kids. He recently had a high school student write an essay about what she wants to do with her future. She had been told, rather preached to, that if she, "made good grades and a ticket to a good college would lead to a good job, one that would guarantee her financial independence"(para. 2). He acknowledges the fact that "they don 't mean to suggest that there is no other point to higher education" (para 3), but he also argues the fact that they are told to go to college it 'll…

Charles Murray’s “Are Too Many People Going to College” makes key points as to why so many students now go away to college and why they should consider not attending the four years of continued education. Murray discusses many aspects such as why so many students feel the need to further their education, when to focus on the liberal arts in a child 's education, and whether all students have the mental capacity to attend college. He then questions if acquiring a degree is necessary for all jobs and comments on the labels that come with not pursuing a higher education To begin with, Murray suggests that a liberal arts education should be taught to students at a young age and should be the foundation of their education. He points out that young…

“Learning as Freedom”, by Michael S. Roth, is primarily a response to recent sentiments that higher education is a waste of resources. Roth states that his opposition frequently wonder why people who aren’t going to make lots of money in their future occupation bother with going to college. (1). According to Roth, advocates of this perspective see attending higher education as “buying a customized playlist of knowledge” (1), and nothing more. Therefore, if the knowledge gained will not insure the buyer great financial success, than why expend the resources to go in the first place?…

Honestly, I am not a very motivated person. I tend to try hard in school for the sole purpose of receiving an A. I never had thought of learning as an activity, but rather a priority. A priority that exists once again, for the purpose of getting an A. In my head, if I received an A, I would feel secure and my life would be able to move along smoothly. Receive a B, and my whole world would stop. Sadly, it seemed almost impossible for me to receive even close to a B when it came to writing.…

Do you know of anyone who has dropped out of high school and has suffered from not receiving a full education? Well according to Monica Potts’s essay, “What’s Killing the Poor White Women?” , it is the lack of education that decreases women’s life expectancy. She tells of a women’s story, Crystal Wilson, who passed away, at a younger age, when there seemed to be nothing wrong with her. Our upbringing as women has so often told us that this should come second to our relationships and responsibilities to other people” (298-299). Here, Rich is further emphasizing that nothing should stand in the way of one’s education. Rich encourages her audience to dismiss preconceived notions of women being inferior to men. Instead, they should focus on themselves and their personal goals instead of fulfilling stereotypical imagined responsibilities of women. The argument that one’s educational aspirations should always be the top priority is where Rich grounds her…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

I’ve chosen to focus on “Exploration and Argumentation” as the subject of this reflective introduction, specifically looking at my argument paper, “Abortion: Right or Wrong?” as a reference to the importance of this learning outcome. I chose to focus on this particular learning outcome because it was the most difficult essay for me to create. While writing this essay it was difficult for me to understand and reciprocate the opposing viewpoint. Understanding an unfamiliar idea and giving ideas for or against a topic is key to creating a fluent argumentative essay.…

Everyone learns and studies differently so in order to really succeed you must find what works for you, and how to keep everything in order. It took me forever to really understand I needed to find my own organization and study tactics. Along with organization the need to use my failures to rise up in my classes really led me to maintain high grades. In my edblog “Failure” I discuss the troubles of failure and how to use it to construct a foundation for school. I find I learn more from failures than excelling grades, because it shows that not everything can be handed to you and that I needed to step up, change what I had been doing, and learn new things in order to help me succeed.…
