Adriana's Short Story

Adriana’s story is a little different than Susanne’s story. Adriana had been hanging out with her new boyfriend of only a week when she was introduced to his family. Things quickly took a turn for the worse when she was denied going home, and was held captive and threats against her family were made. She was told she was going to be working at a gold factory in Tijuana, but upon arrival, she was forced to work in the red zone, where she stayed for three days before being transported to San Diego for prostitution. She was not allowed to have Mexican clients who spoke Spanish, in fear that she would say something to them in Spanish and make them aware of her situation. She was given drugs and pills and often was injected with drugs which made her feel very ill. She thought that would be …show more content…

A common misconception of human trafficking is that it is same or very similar to smuggling. Those who are “smuggled” into a country are doing so by their own free will, without coercion. Human trafficking victims don’t have to be shipped anywhere internationally to still be “trafficked”. Since they are being captured or coerced into slavery, it is against their free will, therefore wildly different from smuggling. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, Human trafficking is a “criminal business that profits from enslaving people for sexual servitude and forced labor.”…

However, it can be argued that despite its detail, the passage may depict an inaccurate narrative of events. This is due to its adulation of Alexius and disparagement of the Franks. This suggests an underlying purpose to glorify the emperor. Therefore, the source is useful in discerning how the conquest was portrayed from the perspective of those from the Byzantine empire.…
