Adrenoleukodystrophy, otherwise known as ALD, is a hereditary condition that affects the nerves in your brain. It is commonly found in young boys. Because it is passed through the X chromosome, and boys only have one X chromosome, there is no balancing X, and are therefore are more severely affected. The first symptoms are usually abnormal aggression, poor school performance and poor memory. These symptoms can escalate to blindness, learning disabilities, seizures, deafness, and progressive dementia. The only possible medicinal treatment known today, Lorenzo’s oil, can only be used on patients that have not yet had symptoms but test positive.
