This is something that is very common in China because of the laws that the government has put on these families. It is a very patriarchal society, so boys are the ones that must be born. Boys carry on the name, help in the fields, help the family when they are old and can be successful in their life. Girls on the other hand are looked at as another mouth to feed. Women will never have the life of being successful and becoming more than just a slave. When a girl is born they are lucky to live the first month without being killed, otherwise they are left for dead. The government thought it would be a good idea to control population by slowing down the amount of children born. Not thinking of the repercussions that would follow this outrageous policy not now but in the future. Women were closely monitored when they had a period or if they seemed to be pregnant. Along with this policy a women had to get a piece of paper from the government saying that it was ok for mothers to give birth. Once the one child was born an IUD was placed so that they could not have another and the government had a right monitor it. If women were to get pregnant and it was over the policy or permission was not granted and someone found out, late term abortions were performed. And even more brutal women were sterilized and were never able to have children again. For many years people were having children and getting rid of them especially if they were girls, which has altered the population but has also thrown the ratio of boys to girls way off.
