“I’m going to try to give him and some anesthesia, and then get him on the fold out stretcher, I could use some help, you know.” It appeared that he had a gunshot wound to the left shoulder and his right knee. He also suffered a minor injury, probably from an explosion, or almost like being launched up and then being throw forcefully by gravity, back to the ground. I imagined it was probably from some sort of explosive being dropped, or thrown towards him. I was just a combat medic in training, I guess you could say. It was my first day on duty. This soldier was my first patient. I was so stunned, that I didn’t hear what Michael was saying until about the third time he said it. “Comrade,COMRADE, can you hear me? We need some anesthesia for this man, and then we need to get him on the stretcher.” Michael said.
Michael got him on some oxygen as well. And at that moment, I knew that the only thing I could do now, was to do everything in my power to get this man safely back to the drop point. I strapped the stretcher on my back and started trekking through the smoke and dirt. There were others with Michael that day, and it was their first or second day on the job. So I didn’t feel as though I was just leaving Michael to save people by himself. “Private Louise Supple,” he replied.
“Well, I am Teven James Jr., and I am going to do everything that I can to get you safely back to the others.”
“Bless your soul,” Private Supple said, and fainted.
Hurry, go faster, I can’t let him die. That is the only thing I could think for the next several minutes. The next thing I know, Private Supple is screaming for me to watch out. There had been a German soldier roughly 30 yards behind us. I ran as fast as I could, dodging his bullets was like dodging rain.
All of the sudden there was EXCRUCIATING pain in my left calf. Blood was all over my foot, and my leg was numb. Somehow I kept going. I don’t know if it was the adrenalyn or my perseverance and mission to get Private Louise Supple back to safety.
PPHHHHHTTTTT!! Another bullet whizzed past us. Faster and Faster I went. The bullets came closer and closer. There were now three or four German soldiers chasing us.
