Hitler's Childhood and Earlier Years
Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in the Upper Austrian border town Braunau in a small town. His father Alois Hitler was born out of wedlock to Maria Anna Schickelgru in 1837, Alois Schickelgruber changed his name to Hitler in 1876. The Hitler's as a family moved many times throughout Adolf's childhood. In 1898, they moved to Linz, the capital of Upper Austria. Alois was an overbearing, domineering husband and a stern, distant, aggressive and violent father. According to psychoanalyst Michael Stone, Hitler's father beat both Adolf and his older brother with a whip regularly. Rejecting the fight for Austria, Hitler then volunteered for the German Army and was accepted to wear his uniform for the next six years. Hitler was promoted and assigned on the 9th of November as a dispatch runner. His job was to carry messages between the front-line and Regimental Headquarters. Hitler enjoyed being in the Army, and had much of an excitement for fighting. According to Ernst Hanfstaengle, Hitler was a victim of sexual bullying while in the army, observed him to be a man uninterested in women but also said that Hitler was known to be a "monk" and as well as Ernst and Adolf were claimed to have a sexual relationship. While in the Army, it seemed to everyone that Hitler was unaffected by the killings of his fellow soldiers. On October 2nd 1916, Hitler was wounded in the left thigh when a shell exploded.
