What comes to mind when you hear the name Adolf Hitler? Is it hatred, pure evil, mass killings? What Hitler did in his 56 years of life will forever be embedded in our history. He created the Nazi Party and masterminded the execution of more than six million Jews. But, what made a young boy with dreams of becoming a famous artist responsible for such atrocities.
Born on April 20, 1889 in Braunau Am Inn, Austria Adolf was the fourth of six children born to Alois Hitler and Klara Hitler. Synagogues, homes, schools and business were vandalized and around 100 Jews were murdered. This became known as Kristallnacht “the night of the broken glass”, referring to the broken glass left after the Nazi raids. Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps hinting at the horrors to come. Death occurred at concentration camps. At times prisoners were used as laborers for SS construction projects, even concentration camps. Prisoners were starved, tortured and even had experiments performed on them.
Hitler wanting to succeed to presidency and have the continued support of the army tried to persuade Ernst Rohm, head of the brown shirts, to support his policies. Unfortunately, this idea led to the “Night of the Long Knives” in which Rohm and Edmund Heines, his lieutenant, were executed. Hitler’s actions were approved by many in the army. Following the death of Paul von Hindenburg later that year Hitler was appointed president. It was demanded by the Germans that Lithuania return Memel land (a region taken from Germany during World War I) or they would be invaded. To avoid any altercations, on March 23, 1939 Lithuania did just that. However, this was not good enough for Hitler, he also wanted to conquer Poland. Despite having the military support from both the French and the British should Germany invade, the Nazi’s attacked. Germany ended up invading Poland on September 1, 1939. Britain and France declared war two days later, World War II had commenced. During the length of the war up to 18 million people including Jews lost their lives at the hands of the Nazi’s.
Hitler’s prejudiced philosophy and concept of power gave the Nazi Party authority throughout Europe dominated by Germans. This power allowed them to force foreign workers into the weapons industry and eventually turned them into slave laborers. The Jewish people had to fear something far worse, their demise. Hitler wanted to rid Europe of all Jews where German rule was in place. This became known as the Final Solution, the Nazi’s plan to destroy the Jewish
