On April 20, 1889, Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Austria. His parents were Alois Hitler and Klara Polzl, and he was the fourth of six children born. While growing up, Hitler became interested in the career of fine art. Hitler’s father did not approve of his interest in fine art, so he and his emotionally sharp father often fought. In 1900, Hitler became isolated and quiet after the death of his younger brother, Edmund. While observing the actions of the German Workers’ Party (DAP), Hitler learned some of the anti-Sematic ideas from the party founder, Anton Drexler. In September 1919, Hitler joined the DAP. The DAP later changed its name to Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDP), which is abbreviated to Nazi. Hitler was given the job to personally design the party banner for the Nazi’s. For the presidency in 1932, Hitler ran against Paul von Hindenburg. In the final count, Hitler lost both rounds of the election, coming in second with 36 percent of the vote. The results from the voting made Hitler a strong player in German politics. To boost political balance, Hindenburg agreed to assign Hitler as chancellor. Hitler used this position to form a dictatorship. Basic rights were suspended and the cabinet was given full legislative power for four years, even allowing them to stray from the constitution.
