Its outrageous the fact that school boards keep a system in place that doesn't teach how to stop unplanned pregnancies is outdated and frankly doesn't work because it only provides half of the knowledge. A passage taken right out of the NAEA or National Abstinence Education association's website states “Despite what you may read in the newspapers, there is a growing body of research that confirms that abstinence-centered education decreases sexual initiation, increases abstinent behavior among sexually experienced teens, and/or decreases the number of partners…

This is especially needed today, as we are no longer necessarily an abstinence abiding culture. As sexuality and comprehensive sexual education become more normalized, there is a greater need for it. Comprehensive sexual education is critical for teens to learn factual information on how to protect themselves and gain a better understanding of their own bodies. Thus, giving them the opportunity to put their care and understanding into their own hands, with the complete privacy that Planned Parenthood so strongly believes in. If people are educated on their reproductive rights and ways to protect themselves, they are then enabling themselves to avoid situations in which they can suffer from.…

The impact of teenage pregnancy on the parents’ attitudes and beliefs and how it affects the family has been an area of study that has been mostly ignored (East, 1999). In the past, limited research in Mississippi has only focused on a small sector of education using the abstinence-only or abstinence-plus approaches. There is a need for education that goes beyond the abstinence approaches that acknowledges that teenagers are sexually active and are becoming sexually active at very young ages. Sexual health education should be placed in the schools, homes, and community centers and organizations.…
