Welcome back educators it has been a wonderful summer relaxing time away from our wonderful children, we are back here and ready to start our year off. This year I wanted to do something different and have newsletters to go out to all of the counselors each month. Each newsletter will focus on a new topic specifically geared toward giving tips or just information that may be helpful. This month’s topic focuses Social Media and its effects on the adolescent, Social media has become a prevalent part of the adolescent's life. The adolescent of today spends a great deal of time on some type of social: Social media are gaining in popularity every day.

• Cheating – More and more students have reported cheating using their cell phones
• Lack of focus –Students spend more time on their phones even while they are in school
• Immature writing skills- Students spend so much time using text messaging slang, it retards their writing skills
• Verbal communication –Many students find it easier to communicate in text messaging they struggle with verbal communication
• Cyber-bullying-Cyber-bullying (the use of electronic communication to bully someone, usually by sending intimidating or threatening messages) is commonplace online, causes emotional trauma, and sometimes even leads to suicide. 49.5% of students reported victimization by bullying online and 33.7% admitted to online bullying. A 2012 study found that at least 800,000 minors had been harassed on Facebook. Middle school children who experienced cyberbullying were almost twice as likely to try to kill themselves. (McGilliveray, 2015)

5 to 10% of Internet users are actually unable to control how much time they spend online though it's a psychological addiction as opposed to a substance addiction brain scans of these people actually show a similar impairment of the regions that those with drug dependence have specifically there is a clear degradation of white matter in the regions that control emotional neurological excitement after each interaction sounds a little like a drug there is also a shift when looking at multitask you would think that those who use social media websites would be better at multitasking multitasking but studies have shown that when comparing people who spend a lot of time on the Internet to those that don't have found that when comparing heavy media uses to other state before much worse during task switching test increase multitasking online reduces your brain's ability to filter interferences I can't even make it harder for your brain to commit Many of the students that have been surved reported that social media helps them connect to the to their friends they believe that it strengthens their relationships and they would be lost if they didn't have social media in some form or fashion when it comes to their identity having lasting friendships this solidifies their identity and helps them to fit in because it allows them to fit in this is a benefit of positive (AsapScience, 2014)
