Freud describes the id as the basic biological reflexes and drives that maximize pleasure and minimize pain. He also says that the id tries to remove all excitation and return to a quiet state (Crain, 2011). Juliana reflects the id as she is head over heels for Bryce for majority of the movie and finds pleasure in being around him although he does not return those feelings. At one point during the film, Juliana is asked about Bryce and a comment is made about how she is always talking about him unconsciously. She responds with “it must be his eyes” which demonstrates that she finds pleasure by just being near him even though he tends to ignore her or treat her terribly. The ego makes its appearance when Juliana realizes that Bryce is not as charming as she once thought him to be when he lied about his family enjoying the eggs she had given him and then proceeded to insult her home. His harsh words and lies pull her out of the hallucination she had been living in for years. Bryce shows characteristics of the super ego although not consistently throughout the movie. After he comes to a realization that he does in fact care for Juliana and she has ignored him after the comments he made he uses his moral compass to try to remedy the situation and in a sense win her back.
