The effects on a Child of Having an Adolescent Mother Even when a mother is financially stable, and has a father or other caregiver present to help with care of the baby, being a mother is stressful. Adolescent mothers, or mothers who give birth and raise a child while being a teenager, have triple the regular amount of stress. The mothers that still have to balance school, relationships, and growing up usually struggle taking care of the baby and themselves. Not all adolescent mothers are bad mothers, but awareness should be spread about the negative effects of having a baby while being nineteen and under. If the abort does not work and something goes wrong, both the baby and the mother can lose their life or be seriously/permanently injured. Mothers who raise children at a young age are also more likely to be harsher with their child when dealing with punishments, mostly because of staying up late at night to care for a screaming baby. This can lead to the parent being more apt to spank their child. Finances also play a huge role in physical problems babies go through while having an adolescent mother. Many times the father will leave the mother alone to raise the child. If the mother has no other family or friends to help with costs, the mother may not be able to adequately care for the child. This can affect the baby in many different ways: the baby may not be fed enough or may be fed unhealthy foods which can cause growth problems and other health conditions, the mother may also not be able to get the necessary health care for the child, including regular check-ups with the doctor and dentist, and finally the mother will be less likely to take the child to the hospital in case of an emergency due to the medical bills. Parents may put their education on hold to find a job or to get married. Short term this may seem like a smart plan, but long term this is not the best decision. If the parents finish school, they can get a better job with higher paying wages and may be more suitable to help their child with homework in the future. It will also set an awesome example for their children if they want to get a higher education as well (Bodeeb). Teen pregnancies hurt the economy, which can cause the child not to receive as well of an education as he or she would in a thriving economy. Children who are born to adolescent parents are already less likely to develop strong cognitive and language skills as well as social and emotional skills like self-control that are essential for school readiness (“How Adolescent Parenting”). The other factors continue to add up against the child. Adolescent pregnancies can be harmful to their child physically, emotionally, and mentally. Older mothers tend to be more mature and able to make better decisions for their child. Many adolescent women become pregnant on accident, but many young women also try to become pregnant on purpose.
