This is done through MRI. The MRI can differentiate between gray and white matter found in the brain. Gray matter contains the cell bodies of the neurons as well as their synapses on the cells. It can be found on the surface of the brain. On the other hand, white matter is found in the center of the brain and contains the projections that go between the neurons. Participants were girls aged 11-13 years old. They were told to read certain cards that had to do with different emotions while their brains were being scanned. In addition, hormone levels were also measured in the girls. They were looking for differences in the development of portions of the brain responsible for emotional processing when compared with age and hormone levels. She found that development of the left anterior temporal cortex is caused by changes in hormone levels.
