‘Greasy Lake’
In the story, T.C Boyle introduces a group of high school boys in their adolescence. Adolescence is a stage in one’s life that marks the transition from childhood to adulthood. It is a point where one becomes rebellious and curious, with a desire to resist or go against authority and eager to discover new things. At this stage, teenagers mostly engage indecent behaviors such as; drinking alcohol, substance abuse, and sexual activities. This stage is the most crucial as it shapes up one’s life. It can either destroy or make a teenager’s future. Some change to better by learning from their mistakes whereas others choose to remain that way for their entire life after high school.

“There was a time when……it was good to be bad….we were all dangerous characters then” (164). And so the characters were bad then too. This statement immediately enlightens the readers that the narrator’s perception about the lake and past decisions had changed. Also, the narrator tells of how he and his friends enjoyed being rebellious. While there, they took a vehicle mistaking it to be Tony Lovett’s, a friend of theirs. The lead character honks the car and flashes the lights with the aim of scaring his friend to make him think that it is the police. But instead, they realize the person they are trying to scare is not their friend but some infuriated and tough guy. The storyteller describes the man as a man who acts first before thinking or discussing. This tough guy picks up a fight with the main character, and his friends and it becomes horrible to watch. The main character becomes scared. His pulse quickened, his hands began shaking, and he became confused
