Adolescence is a period of significant growth and development between the ages of 10- to 15-year-olds. adolescents experience rapid and significant developmental change. Being knowledgeable, understanding and responding to the unique developmental characteristics of young adolescents is pivotal at middle level education in a child’s life.
Understanding a child’s adolescence growth is accepting their natural bodily changes. Understanding that their maturity levels change rapidly at this time and age is important when teaching children during these ages. This reflection covers the changes and the importance of structuring curriculum to benefit the child. Research suggests distinctive characteristics of young adolescents with regard to their physical, cognitive, psychological, and social-emotional development.
Physical development refers to bodily changes including growth, improved gross and fine motor skills, and biological maturity. In early adolescence, the young adolescent body undergoes more developmental change than at any other time except from birth to the age of two years old. *SITE Developmental growth includes significant increases in height, weight, and internal organ size as well as changes in skeletal and muscular systems. Young adolescents often experience coordination issues because of this growth.
