Short Story Of Adnan's Innocence

Improved Essays
Adnan’s innocence is supported by the unreliable story that Jay Wilds gave to the police. Jay is a friend of Adnan but they were not close at all. They had mutual friends and they smoked together every now and then. On February 18, 1999, Jay was interviewed about Hae’s murder, and he explained that Adnan was the killer. He describes all aspects of that day from start to finish, however after several interviews, his story changes every time. There were some small changes that he made that had little significance and there were big ones that question if he is telling the truth. For example, Jay mentioned in the first trial that they both were smoking on the day of the murder, but at the second trial he changed this statement that Adnan was not …show more content…
These were little changes that draw hesitation to believe him, but there were far bigger changes that prove Jay to be unreliable source. An important piece of the murder story was that Adnan received a phone call from a police officer asking if he had seen Hae. At the first interview, Jay says that they are at a restaurant when Adnan gets the call, but later on he says they were at a friends house. Another thing Jay said at the first taped interview, that changed later on, is that he refused to help Adnan dig the grave. Two weeks later, this was changed to they both dug the grave for Hae Min Lee. Aside from all of these changes in his story, one of his biggest changes in his story is whether or not he knew Adnan was going to kill Hae previous to January 13th. In the first taped interview, Jay specifically says that he only knew Adnan was going to kill her on the same day he did it because it was the first time he mentioned anything about wanting to hurt Hae. In an interview two weeks later, Jay says differently. He states, “I think I'm gonna kill her. Yeah, he said he, he said that a lot. In my conversations with him, on several occasions he said that” (Serial …show more content…
This is the most unsettling change, because seeing a dead body not something a person just forgets. Jay at first said he saw Hae’s body in the trunk at Edmondson Avenue, but then admits to lying and says that he saw the body in the Best Buy parking lot. Jay cannot keep his story straight and is adding, changing and taking parts out that make his story very unbelievable and clearly a lie. With so many changes to his story, it is astounding as to why he was believed. Adnan most likely would not have gone to jail if it wasn’t for Jay’s testimony. Jay was so inconsistent, it was unfair to Adnan that he was convicted on mainly the story Jay told, and most likely made up. Jay’s story was very unreliable and an experience like that would have been easily remembered. Other than the fact that Jay’s whole story is widely unbelievable, he was a very sketchy character in the eyes of others. No one seemed surprised when they found out that Jay was wrapped up in a murder, but most were surprised when they found out that Adnan was. According to many people, Jay had a reputation of lying and an being overall bad person. He worked at a porn store, did a lot of bad things and was really

There is no physical evidence that Adnan committed the murder, just assumptions and theories that led to his imprisonment. Jay, Adnan’s best friends boyfriend, tells the cops that Adnan had let him know that he was going to kill Hae. He also states that Adnan gives him his car and cellphone but who does this with someone you don't really know. There is no true evidence here. Jay even lets the cops know he helped bury Hae’s body.…

Jay told the police that Adnan told him the plan of how he is going to murder Hae. Jay also said that Adnan showed him the body of Hae in his trunk. In the podcast, Jay says, “Because it’s not something you forget – where you were when you saw a dead body in the trunk of a car.” (Episode 4, pg 65). This explains that Adnan is guilty since Jay witness the body of Hae after Adnan murdered her.…

There is too much leisure time in the way Jay has described the timeline. Also, if Jay is telling the police that he is innocent and Adnan is guilty why wipe the fingerprints and throw the clothes away. The payphone must’ve been somewhere else. Jay probably forgot how the day went for there to be leisure time. He probably did not want to be involved in the first place and did not want to go to the cops at first.…

His heroic testimony against his good friend is the main reason the state was able to correctly convict Adnan. In his sworn statement, Jay affirms Adnan killed Hae and that he saw her dead body. He tells investigators, “all [he could] see [was that] Hae’s lips [were] all blue, and she [was] pretzeled up in the back of the trunk. And she [was] dead.” This descriptive account of Jay’s first interaction with the deceased corps is very clear evidence that he was a witness to this disgusting act.…

But contrary to that, he should not have been able to tell that he was high if he could remember that but not the call. Adnan comes right out and tells us “I do remember being high at the time because the craziest thing is to be high and have the police call your phone. I will never forget that.” (Koenig, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”). Being able to remember this detail but not being able to recall anything us from the day can lead us to believe that he killed Hae on this day and he is trying to cover up for it by…

The second reason I think Adnan must be innocent is because there are too many inconsistencies that Jay provides during his testimony while being interviewed by the police. Jay provides many stories, which sometimes do not match up to Adnan’s story or to the stories he provides. There were many inconsistencies that did not make sense, of which I will share the 3 that I found most important, which you can find in episode 4 called “Inconsistencies". The…

Even with all of this in mind, the court sees him as the main suspect and is not dissuaded by his normal persona. They pin him as Hae Min Lee’s killer by using the jealous boyfriend stereotype. It is also bad for his case when there are phone records and accounts of him acting strange on the day of her murder. Jay seems to be the only one that has a story that is sound enough to have Adnan as the main suspect.…

In his play Twelve Angry Men, Reginald Rose brings us back in time to 1957, to a jury room of a New York Court of Law where one man, Juror #8, confronts the rest of the jury to look at a homicide case without prejudice, and ultimately convinces Juror #2, a very soft-spoken man who at first had little say in the deliberation. Throughout the play, several jurors give convincing arguments that make one think about whether the boy is “guilty” or “not guilty.” Ultimately, one is convinced by ethos, logos, and pathos. We can see ethos, logos, and pathos having an effect on Juror #2 as he begins as a humble man and changes into someone brave at the end. Although all three modes play a part in convincing Juror #2, pathos is the most influential because…
