Adnan Syed's Guilty Case

Improved Essays
Adnan Syed was convicted of murder 17 years ago. He’s been in jail ever since. But what if he wasn’t actually guilty? What if all this time someone else was supposed to be in his place? This is what investigator Sarah Koenig has been working on finding out. She’s determined to prove one man’s guilt or innocence. Did Adnan Syed really murder his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee in 1999, or was he wrongly convicted. After investigating, it is clear that Adnan is innocent because, he has an alibi at the time of the murder, he had never heard of or been to the place where the body was buried, and his friend’s story about Adnan’s guilt doesn’t add up. To begin with, Adnan had an alibi at the time of the murder. An old highschool classmate, Asia McClain, …show more content…
The police interrogate Jay multiple times. Each time they question him, his story of that day changes. Sarah says,“In the first taped interview, Jay says they're grabbing some food at a restaurant when Officer Adcock calls Adnan asking if he's seen Hae. The next time he tells it, he says that when that call comes, they're at a friend's apartment –…” (Ep. 1, p. 63). In this interview, Jay completely changes the location that they were at when they get the call asking about Hae being missing. This is suspicious because why would Jay lie if he say’s he’s supposedly innocent. Koenig also states“At the first trial, Jay says they both got high in Adnan's car, but the second trial, he says only he smoked and Adnan didn't want to.” (Ep. 1, p. 63). Again, Jay lies about what Adnan and him did the day of Hae Min Lee’s murder. It’s a possibility that Jay is lying because he never really did all of those things with Adnan. Every time he got interrogated, he could’ve been forgetting the lies he made up and therefore had to say something else. In conclusion, Adnan is innocent because Jay, the person Adnan was mainly convicted off of seems to be lying about

One thing about this case is undeniably certain. Jay is somehow connected to the murder of Hae Min Lee. And I have an aching feeling that he is closer to it than he is letting on. Jay’s stories do not add up. Could be that they’re never the same, could be that his friend’s stories are fishy too, or it could be that he is trying way too hard to appear innocent.…

There is no physical evidence that Adnan committed the murder, just assumptions and theories that led to his imprisonment. Jay, Adnan’s best friends boyfriend, tells the cops that Adnan had let him know that he was going to kill Hae. He also states that Adnan gives him his car and cellphone but who does this with someone you don't really know. There is no true evidence here. Jay even lets the cops know he helped bury Hae’s body.…

Jay told the police that Adnan told him the plan of how he is going to murder Hae. Jay also said that Adnan showed him the body of Hae in his trunk. In the podcast, Jay says, “Because it’s not something you forget – where you were when you saw a dead body in the trunk of a car.” (Episode 4, pg 65). This explains that Adnan is guilty since Jay witness the body of Hae after Adnan murdered her.…

Sarah described Rabia as fierce and awesome, persuading us to like her as much as she does. In the episodes, Sarah surrounded herself with people who believed wholeheartedly that Adnan was not guilty. Jay on the other hand, Sarah tried to get an interview with Jay but he refused. It is possible that Jay thought that Sarah would be biased with her opinion and then declined the interview. Which he wasn’t wrong because Sarah spent a lot of time deciding that Jay's story was possible, but very difficult to accomplish.…

The call logs did not match the states timeline nor Jay’s perspective on the timeline how he told the story. If the call logs did not match the timeline how was the police to get hard evidence like Hae’s Car. If they dont matter how can they say Adnan is guilty the timeline can prove his innocence because the incoming/outgoing calls on January 13th are nowhere close to the states timeline. Furthermore, how did Jay know where Hae’s car was and not Adnan.…

His heroic testimony against his good friend is the main reason the state was able to correctly convict Adnan. In his sworn statement, Jay affirms Adnan killed Hae and that he saw her dead body. He tells investigators, “all [he could] see [was that] Hae’s lips [were] all blue, and she [was] pretzeled up in the back of the trunk. And she [was] dead.” This descriptive account of Jay’s first interaction with the deceased corps is very clear evidence that he was a witness to this disgusting act.…

But contrary to that, he should not have been able to tell that he was high if he could remember that but not the call. Adnan comes right out and tells us “I do remember being high at the time because the craziest thing is to be high and have the police call your phone. I will never forget that.” (Koenig, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”). Being able to remember this detail but not being able to recall anything us from the day can lead us to believe that he killed Hae on this day and he is trying to cover up for it by…

The second reason I think Adnan must be innocent is because there are too many inconsistencies that Jay provides during his testimony while being interviewed by the police. Jay provides many stories, which sometimes do not match up to Adnan’s story or to the stories he provides. There were many inconsistencies that did not make sense, of which I will share the 3 that I found most important, which you can find in episode 4 called “Inconsistencies". The…

Judicial murder made by inequity legal system In the month after “Making a Murderer” premiered on Netflix, more than 129,000 Americans signed a petition to pardon Avery and Dassey for their convictions to the murder of Halbach and in the book ‘in cold blood’ written by Truman Capote, the two murderers were treated by ignoring the mental problem influence of theirs, they stayed in prison for five years and were finally performed death penalty. After reading the book and watching the TV show, I think these crimes sufficiently prove that there is a fundamental inequity at work in countless branches of legal system. Making a Murderer tells a story about the life of Steven Avery, who was convicted of rape in 1985 and imprisoned for 18 years, despite…

Even with all of this in mind, the court sees him as the main suspect and is not dissuaded by his normal persona. They pin him as Hae Min Lee’s killer by using the jealous boyfriend stereotype. It is also bad for his case when there are phone records and accounts of him acting strange on the day of her murder. Jay seems to be the only one that has a story that is sound enough to have Adnan as the main suspect.…

Is murder included when he says “anything”or is there a grey area. Going back to his own observations these are what make him the most questionable, Jay remembers way too many details about how Hae looked. If Jay killed Hae that would explain his extensive knowledge on the smaller details of the murder and the changes in story. The things he is sharing could quite possible be his memories that he now has to use to frame someone else unfortunately Adnan being the easy escape-go. Jay killing Hae premeditatively makes more sense she had something that jeopardized Jay’s relationship with Stephanie so her panned out how to kill her and ended up being able to frame…
