Adnan Syed: Guilty Case Study

When an individual is blamed for murder, it is hard to provide proof that the individual did not commit the crime. In the case of Adnan Syed, he was convicted of the murder of Hae Min Lee, Adnan's ex-girlfriend, however, the jury should have acquitted Adnan because there was insufficient amount of evidence to prove Adnan murdered Hae, Adnan's lawyer did not present all the facts needed to prove Adnan is not guilty, and many of the claims made by the prosecutor are circumstantial. Adnan Syed should have been acquitted of his charge against the murder of Hae Min Lee because there was insufficient amount of evidence to prove Adnan had actually committed this crime. The main evidence brought into court to prove Adnan is guilty is based off the testimonial given by Jay Wilds, one of Adnan’s friends. Jay stated in court that he had first hand knowledge that Adnan murdered Hae as he helped Adnan bury Hae’s body in Leakin Park and dispose the car used to transport Hae’s body. There was no solid physical evidence linking this murder to Adnan because the prosecutor had claimed, due to the fact that Adnan’s fingerprints were in Hae’s car, it was possible Adnan had killed Hae. Along with the cell phone records, AT&T had given the police cell tower information, pinpointing Adnan at the location where Hae was murdered (“Leakin Park”). This is insufficient to be submitted in as evidence because cell phones was just starting, it is something new for everyone during that time, so the information provided by the cell towers are questionable as to the accuracy. Cell phone companies at that time is considered young, so the information and data given to the companies could cause confusion as they may not know how to precisely interpret those data.
