It sounds a short step away from lunacy to say that one week, one email could change your life. “Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in the Harvard Medical School Medscience Summer Program.” It felt like a dream to me as I rushed down the stairs to tell my parents. The application was a shot in the dark, I desperately wanted to be accepted to the program, but I never imagined I would be one of the applicants out of thousands from across the country to be chosen. I took the train in to Boston by myself, navigating the city alone for the first time alone and gaining an exhilarating independence that both excited and scared me. For that week I felt like I was testing the water of what will one day be my career path. If I had any uncertainties before my time there, they had all washed away by the end of the week. In our final reflection on the last day of classes the prompt was about how our thinking had changed after all of our lessons. Before I was interested in the medical field because I thought it was cool to work with blood and guts and my interest in science, but now I know how arduous the job really can be. The power to save lives is in your hands and you have a duty to do everything in your power to help people that need it. That’s what I want to dedicate my life towards. I want to be the change that people need and to help patients attain their best quality of life.
