Administrative Interview of Mark Hageman
Mark Hageman is new to Concord Christian School. He has been hired as the CCS high school principal in the summer of 2015. Coming form a public school in Texas, Mr. Hageman’s main priority this year is to establish an anti-bullying policy. The principal mentions that even though there is no serious bullying present at CCS, he would like to create a set of regulations and procedures so that the students will feel comfortable to address bullying or harassment in an anonymous way.
Student Issues
Mr. Hageman is an advocate of orderly, purposeful, and safe school climate.
The principal mentions that creating a positive learning climate requires a great understanding of the needs of learners, which are diverse and are partly addressed by classroom and curricular activities. When the school climate is not positive, the student behavior is greatly impacted, and therefore, school becomes unsafe. Mark recalls that at one time, people did not think of schools as being dangerous places. Today, violence in schools is everyone’s problem. Mr. Hageman does not think that the school has fully embraced the value of diversity. In addition, the principal is concerned that the curriculum used at CCS is not multicultural. The principal supports the idea that all the students in the classroom should see themselves and their experiences in the curriculum. Because students in settings with limited diversity do not have the opportunity to interact with people from other cultural backgrounds, they should learn to value diversity. As a school leader, Mark has determined the cultural groups that exist in their school and community and is on a mission to nurture not only interaction, but also provide opportunities to integrate diversity into the school’s
