He continues by saying that many people think that reading quickly is a sign of high intelligence, but he believes this isn’t the case. According to Adler, reading books should take much more time effort than reading something like a newspaper (Adler 20). Adler also states one more possible objection “You can’t lend them to your friends because nobody else can read them without being distracted by your notes. Furthermore, you won’t want to lend them because a marked copy is a kind of intellectual diary, and lending it is almost like giving your mind away. If your friend wishes to read your Plutarch’s Lives, ‘Shakespeare’, or The Federalist Papers, tell him gently but firmly, to buy a copy” (Adler 20).
