After reading Adler’s book, I found some helpful information about studying or reading different types of materials that can help me become a better reader and learner. Reading has not been one of my strongest points in school. I have not learned how to read the meanings of important words that the other expects the reader to know. I have not mastered picking out the words that are meant to be clues or forshadowing to information the author expects the reader to catch. I try to be an exceptional reader in many different subjects but I have learned to read well enough the hard way to receive passing grades in school. Most of time, I am one who can sit there and watch or read something and still not know a big event is happening or just happened.

The author uses the term “dead teachers” for books because they teach the same material and sometimes more information than a teacher can. By dead teacher, the author is not referring to the author being dead, but the book being a dead object that teaches the reader information. Thinking of a book is used in our society today without even realizing it. Most online classes teach the student information through the Internet because most of the time you do not have a live teacher teaching you. Online classes are popular in today’s society because it easier to do homework through the Internet than it is to go and sit through a class session. I have never thought about the idea of rules to read a book the right way and the wrong way. When I begin reading, I think about what the teacher would want and not what information the author is portraying. These rules really opened my eyes to what needs to improvements I need to make when reading a book. One major change I need to make when reading a book is to decide what problem the author is trying to solve explained within their writings. The other part of deciding what problem the other is solving is what the author failed to mention in their writing. When reading, I do not look for ways that the author could explain some ideas differently. Another major change I need to make within the readings is to discover and interpret the most important words the author emphasizes.
