Personal Narrative: Adjusting While Experiencing

Improved Essays
Adjusting while Experiencing America is a country composed of different people and diverse cultures. Therefore, there is a good deal of ways of life or cultural phenomena for newcomers to adjust to. Before moving here, I was a little bit optimistic because I have been to some European , Asian and Oceanian counties and saw many different cultures there, so I thought that I might be somewhat prepared for changes. However, when I really stepped my foot on this country, I noticed that I have quite a long way to go before getting used to things such as holidays, tips and people’s names. First of all, it takes time to get familiar with the meaning and background of American holidays and then begin learning to enjoy them. During the first year of my stay in America, I found with surprise that Americans are so lucky to have so many holidays. Sometimes, they may have 2 or 3 …show more content…
In America, it is so natural to give and accept tips. Tips are seen being given everywhere, for instance, in restaurant, hotel, airport and taxi. People are used to giving and receiving tips because that is part of their traditional culture. Whereas, back in my country, there is no such kind of tradition or habit of tipping someone for service. For example, if you give tips to someone publicly to show your appreciation, you may risk getting into an awkward situation because people don’t know what to do. Sometimes, they may feel very embarrassed or being belittled. But here everyone follows the tipping rules in a natural way. Well, as the saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. In my earlier days here, whenever eating in restaurants or staying in hotels, I would remind myself of keeping the tipping rules. Obviously, I did carry out the rules carefully but not naturally. Today, being fully aware of the cultural part of tipping rules, I can apply them following the American

It was some November day, and the whole gymnasium was silent. I look around and can count 19 girls surrounding me. The only thing you could hear was the heavy breathing of 20 girls after the last basketball tryout. It was almost as if the air was a prized possession and everyone was trying to steal it from each other. The air was filled with sweat and anticipation.…

I am a server and I totally get why most waiters/waitress get mad when they don’t get tipped. Some people just don’t get the point of tipping their server. Some days are slow, and some days are extremely busy as a waiter or waitress. It is more than just taking someone’s order and bringing it to them. It never seems to fail that there will be that one group of people that doesn’t leave a tip no matter how hard the waitress works.…

Change Have you ever been so moved by something it changed you to do something out of character, or ever see a kind gesture and thought of the beauty if change had covered the world? Similar to Paul Logan in the story “Zero”, I became cocooned in change and my eyes will forever see the world and people living in it through another lens. To begin, I always had a heart for people, but most the time just had the connection from a distance, not enough to impact any lives or great change. Driving to a play downtown after a nice dinner my boyfriend Marcus and I came across a filthy man and his faded sign stating a simple message “Im hungry” on the front, Marcus gave him our leftover food and smiled.…

Becoming an adult is something we all eventually do, and there are some many factors whom can determine how we are going to develop to the real world; some of these key elements are such manners of family, age, and everything at your surroundings. Life can be so different for everyone, as far as for me, having to grow up in a multi diverse culture such as the Mexican one has been truly an honor. Despite of all horrific blasphemies Mexico have been accused lately, I can say that there is no more fun, spoiled, and perfect experience in life as being raised in Mexico. Adapting can be hard for a child, however, that was not my case whatsoever; despite of being born in the long star state, Texas, living at America was never my parents plan, after…

The Transition When I woke up, I smelled pine and the sun shone so brightly into my eyes, almost to where it blinded me. I felt a hunger that I had never felt before. After that, I ate all of my food I had in my backpack, but it only made the hunger worse. Then I saw it: a ginormous pool of blood, my blood, surrounded me. When I looked around a second time, I spotted a small village close by…

Change, they say, is the only constant thing that exists. The irony is that I totally believe it to be true but I never thought that I would be one of the people who are bad at dealing with change. I grew up in a small city in the Philippines. My simple life with my mom and my sisters, however hard it can get at times, did not hinder us to survive our day-to-day lives. It was 2014 when my family decided to permanently reside here in the United States to fulfill my grandma’s request to have all her children, including my mom, to stay with her.…

When I went up everything was fine but when I came down I landed on someone's shoe and my knee turned and when I fell down and looked at my knee, it was turned towards the other way. Conductor of change I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. The town I grew up in was small, yet despite its size, many divisions were apparent. One of these divisions was the railroad tracks following the river through the city. I've come to realize the part they played in my childhood experiences. My friends never came to my house for sleepovers and their parents wouldn't make plans if my mother was driving their children.…

This semester is has been stressful and rewarding at the same time. The reason that has caused these feelings such as stress is sourced from the workload that I hold and the little time allotted to complete such tasks. It is also rewarding simply because I am able to see what my limits and accomplish more than I thought I could. Personally this semester has been immensely hard solely because I have set many goals that I have been trying to accomplish. I have also been exceedingly busy since I work a full time job and its difficulty during this semester.…
