Adjunctive Yoga

In the article, “Yoga as an Adjunctive Treatment for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A randomized Controlled Trial”, Inslicht and her colleagues (2014) tested whether trauma-informed yoga could be used as a treatment for women with PTSD. The study compared the trauma-informed yoga treatment to a supportive women’s health education class. The study I would like to propose is to test whether yoga with prolonged exposure would be beneficial versus prolonged exposure without yoga. My hypothesis is that women would benefit from prolonged exposure with yoga because it will teach women how to control their mind and body and be able to deal with their conflict head on. In one study (FIND), it shows that many people drop out of prolonged exposure because …show more content…
Then, I would have a licensed psychiatrist screen the applicants to see if they fit the DSM-V criteria for PTSD. I would then take those who passed the screening and randomly assign them to the two treatment groups, prolonged exposure and prolonged exposure with yoga. In the prolonged exposure treatment, participants will go to a psychiatrist’s office to do treatment for one hour once a week for 10 weeks. In the prolonged exposure treatment with yoga, participants will go to a psychiatrist’s office for one hour once a week for 10 weeks with the time split for 30 minutes of yoga and 30 minutes of prolonged exposure treatment. There will be a pretreatment, mid treatment (at 5 weeks), and post-treatment assessment to compare the results of the treatments. The assessment will be conducted by licensed clinicians in which they will determine whether participants still meet the criteria for PTSD in DSM-V based on self-report and observing participant’s

Recovering from trauma may seem impossible to the victims who are left to cope with the intense symptoms that plague them long after the traumatic incident. Although progression is slow, recovery with the right therapy is possible (Wright, 2011). Some victims may choose a therapist who is well equipped to provide therapy to those who have been through trauma. Other victims might choose a spiritual leader to help them through the process of recovery and others may not choose to get help at all. Not only are the chances of recovery low for those victims who choose to untreated, they are also at risk for further difficulties that can disrupt their lives and the lives of their families such as anxiety, depression, pain, and substance abuse (Schiraldi, 2009).…

Qualitative research that address the barriers of using mindfulness based interventions with female veterans noticed classroom interruptions (participants arriving late to group) triggered PTSD symptoms. Noises that echo into the classroom, such as a book being dropped or a loud participant, could cause distractions within the group or individual sessions. Another barrier during mindfulness interventions is female veterans sitting on the ground and getting up after meditation is difficult. Martinez, Kearney, Simpson, Felleman, Bernardi, and Sayre (2015) stated that female veterans need to find appropriate balance to find acceptance and change to manage PTSD and mental illness when using mindfulness-based…

Imagery Exposure Therapy Imagery Exposure Therapy is something I am well acquainted with as a United States Army Veteran. Imagery Exposure Therapy is widely used in the Veterans Administration (VA) for PTSD and victims of rape. In 2011 I was diagnosed with PTSD at a routine doctor’s visit by a doctor who was able to discern my surly mood and recommend counseling. The VA sent me to counseling with a psychologist; at this time I was not aware that I had PTSD, I was resistant to the idea that I may have had PTSD, I was not sure what to expect in a counseling session; and the whole ordeal was very overwhelming.…

PTSD is no longer classified as an anxiety disorder, but instead falls under a new chapter, “Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders.” Researchers and practitioners must be aware of how the changes in classifying the disorder will affect assessment. Plans to transition to measures reflecting the DSM-5 criterion of PTSD should occur for best practices, though it may take some time for a system to accommodate and reflect these changes. According to the National Center for PTSD, the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS), the PTSD Checklist (PCL) and the Life Events Checklist (LEC) have been updated to include DSM-5 criteria for PTSD while the Primary Care PTSD Screen (PC-PTSD) is currently undergoing revision and validation. It is anticipated that researchers will continue to evaluate the adapted measures’ validity for several years to come (Rodríguez-Testal et al., 2014).…
