A prison’s sole purpose is for retribution, incapacitation, deterrence and rehabilitation. When an individual commits of crime/offence against the laws put in place by society and is charged for their crime; the prison system is used to protect society and punish those through taking away privileges and freedom. Through, adjudications and incentive schemes, the prison system is able to provide guards with the ability to take charge and control convicts, allowing the prisoners to reflect on their pervious actions and to possibly want to become reformed characters.

They help to charge the defendant through the court and seek retribution from the crimes the individual has committed while basing the evidence found by the time the accused must serve. Through adjudication the prison system is able to contain different convicts accordingly by their crimes- keeping sex offenders away from open prisons with murders are robbers (to protect the safety of each individual). In prison one does find that some offenders may not be able to cope with the new living arrangement- not being able to smoke whenever they want to, take drugs, see their loved ones, use the bathroom by themselves e.c.t and so may start to rebel by fighting, attempting to commit suicide and refusing to leave their
