After reading the case study I learned, that Adam is a student who has been diagnosed with ADHD. Being that Adam has ADHD, he is therefore lacking in the classroom. Adam is showing that is having a hard time focusing in school, organizing school, and organizing home life. Overall, Adam seems to be lacking in structure or a system. This lack of structure is preventing him from being able to control his body, emotions, and his learning. Students with ADHD benefit from have a constant systematic plan for their day at school and at home. The best way for Adam to overcome his obstacles would be to implement a 504-plan for various reasons. The first reason I think a 504 accommodations plan would better serve for Adam is the biggest factor being his family. Adam’s family doesn’t provide structure at home, and they neglect to see the struggles Adam is facing. Adam is struggling with being overly energetic and the parents blame that on “boys will be boys” instead of his ADHD. A 504-plan doesn’t give children a label as being considered “special education”. For an IEP plan a student must fall under one of the thirteen categories of disabilities. I personally think that Adam’s family would deny an IEP plan because of the fact they neglect to the see the struggles Adam is facing …show more content…
In a 504 plan it states that the child’s disability must be affecting their ability to learn in the general education classroom. In Adam’s case it specially states that “Adam, a sixth grader, is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which interferes with his learning” which correlates directly with a 504 plan. When compared to an IEP, Adam’s disability would need to be directly hindering him from learning the general education curriculum.
