I strongly believe that current staff at Marquette are stuck within the confines of the Oracle system, but are very willing and ready for change to a new financial system. A listening session was held by the executive search firm hired to find our next chief financial officer. Key stakeholders were invited to share what they were looking for in a new chief. Unanimous support was given to anyone who brought up dropping our current system and adding staff to the finance department. Marquette has many staff who are like Max, asking why are we sticking with something that is not working for us? Why don’t we ask the big questions that would allow us more freedom, flexibility, and time? I have found that I relate to our Oracle system in a way that is similar to how Zed related to living in the maze. He did not dwell on it. He did not search for cheese, he only ate it to sustain his mind. I don’t dwell on the limitations of the Oracle system. I have learned how to get the information I need out of it. Max found the way out of the maze and he also found how the maze was developed and who moved the cheese. Max wanted to use his mind and broaden his horizons. His peace was found when he could prove that he did not have to follow everyone else. Zed did not care to let the maze or the pursuit of cheese control him. He pursued knowledge and inner peace. Big found his peace in working out and making himself physically stronger. He did not let the maze hold him back or hold him in. If you want to find your ultimate cheese, you need to search for what brings you inner peace. That may be answers to a question, building upon your knowledge, or building upon your physical strength.
