Addie Bundren Family: A Brief Summary

Addie Bundren is married to Anse and the mother of five children. Addie is a lonely woman even though she is married to Anse. Addie is dying and the family is preparing for her death. Their oldest son, Cash, is building her coffin in front of her bedroom window. Addie seems to indirectly cause chaos for the family even after her death. Their trip to Jefferson, Addie’s final resting place, has lots of problems along the way. The Bundren family is a very dysfunctional group because of Addie and Anse marriage, sibling rivalry, and selfishness.

Addie’s feelings toward her husband, Anse, is curt and unemotional. The parents showed no love toward each other which influenced how the children interacted with each other. Addie thought she loved Anse when they were first married. She felt as his wife she was obligated to give Anse children. She gave birth to two sons, Cash and Darl. She then started having an affair with Mr. Witfield. She became pregnant with his son, Jewel. Out of guilt of the affair, she gave birth to two more children, Dewey Dell, and Vardaman. Dewey Dell found the attention she was missing from her family with a local farmhand, Lafe. Soon Dewey finds out she is pregnant. Dewey Dell is very afraid of what her family will think. She

Each family member is very independent. They work to benefit themselves and not the family as a whole. Being as poor as they were it appears that the only way to survive was to look after themselves. This worked for most of the family members. It was Darl who didn’t survive the family challenges as he ended up in an mental institution. Jewel seemed to adjust the easiest but that may be because he was a half brother and never felt like part of the family anyway. Now Anse marries a lady he just met so the family has new challenges that each with have to learn how to cope
