Throughout the sections, a pattern seems to be arising. A pattern involving Addie Bundren and her coffin. In this passage, narrated by Cash, it is pointed out that “It won't balance.” The “it” that cash is referring to is the coffin in which contains the rapidly rotting corpse of Addie Bundren. Because Addie was placed in the coffin upside down, along with it turns all of Cash’s hard work. But why is Addie placed into the coffin upside down? In the book, it is said that this is done in order to preserve Addie’s dress. This shows how willing the Bundrens were to appease Addie, even in her death, even risking further unbalancing their already dysfunctional family. But it also shines a light on the backward perspective the family seems to hold
