Addicts avoiding Jail by claiming addiction is a medical problem
More and more drug addicts are avoiding jail time by claiming that addiction is a medical problem. What a person does to his/her body is their own choice, but once he/she starts committing crimes to get more drugs, or as a result of being under the influence, they need to be punished for it. Too many people are getting away with committing crimes by claiming that his/her addiction is a mental health problem and they cannot be held responsible for what they do while under the influence. Instead of making excuses for those who choose to make the wrong decisions, society, as a whole needs to ensure that each person is held responsible for his or her own actions

The rehabs also help their patents learn how to deal with life situations. Adults that have altered their brain through the usage of drugs are usually unable to adapt to life situations. One phrase that really catches my attention is “Maladaptive patterns of behavior include deficits in problem-solving abilities that manifest as the inability to alter one’s behavior in problem-solving situations, inability to understand problem situations and a tendency to react impulsively and emotionally” (Kolesnikova et al). In short Ms. Kolesnikova is saying that addicts that have become maladaptive are unable to understand situations, therefore they will usually react emotionally or thoughtlessly. This is where Rehabilitation centers can become very helpful. “One of the aims in the rehabilitation of drug addicts is to help patients to achieve efficient functioning skills for successful adaptation in society, for example, to identify and classify problem-solving techniques and mechanisms for overcoming stress, and resources for finding alternative solutions for reducing self-destructive behavior” (Kolesnikova et al).
