People are actually addicted to many things and don’t even realize it. Addictions are dependency on something or someone, because a person feels inadequate without it. There are multiple types of addictions some of the most common addictions of which people are not aware of are to food, technology and to people. In order to understand the reason people are attracted to those substances there must be an analysis of the brain’s response and as to why people accumulate addictions. Although addictions are pre-conceivably a bad thing, some addictions can be good because of the positive affects they can have on the brain in relieving cognitive dissonance. Addictions are caused by the constant want of the pleasurable reactions in the brain. The reaction causes the constricting of blood vessels in the brain. When the blood vessels constrict that section of the brain is deficient in oxygen which, causes the neurons to fire more rapidly in the section receiving more oxygen to try to compensate. This causes the feeling of a rush or the feeling of being high. When someone was addicted to something the “prefrontal cortex were hyper, hyper, hyperactive addicts and were correlated with their cravings” (Piore) if the person was submitted into an environment containing the substance of which they were addicted. An addiction is considered bad if it to harmful to the users health or the well being of others around them. While an addiction is good for soothing cognitive dissonance caused by a feeling of emptiness or inner conflict. Usually, addictions to a substance like alcohol or narcotic drugs are considered bad because of the violence which usually comes from the mind altering state and many drugs are illegal. While in food addictions, the body normally craves ‘junk food’ which could be harmful to ones health. They are considered normal because almost everyone has some sort of comfort food. Like food, technology addiction is in the mainstream culture. The invention of new technology has connected the world socially and industrially. Though connection is good, it has impersonalized the communication between people. The distractions of the devises have caused have ultimately deteriorated personal communication. The aspects of a ‘good’ addiction is one that helps someone physically and socially. The addiction to people such as ‘falling in love’ is considered a good addiction. Because the feeling of being loved and the pleasure of being around that specific person causes fills the emptiness some people have making it a good
