According to Psychology Today, “addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance or engages in an activity that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health.” (Addiction. (2015). Retrieved October 15, 2015.) Addiction can affect people both physiologically and psychologically. There are behavioral addictions such as sex, gambling, shopping or spending, and obsessive internet use. There are also consumptive addictions such as drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and food. Whatever kind of addiction it is; the effects of addiction are everywhere. It can affect any person no matter the race or creed. It isn’t selective of background or upbringing. It doesn’t matter if you’ve attended an Ivy-League school or dropped out in the eighth grade; the impact of addiction is felt in all aspects of humanity. It is seen in the father who smokes two-packs-a-day and coughs incessantly to the point that he cannot breathe because of the looming COPD condition that plagues him. It is also seen in the mother who has maxed out her credit cards by receiving cash advances because she needed more money to gamble. It is seen in detox units where patients are in constant pain due to the effects of sclerosis of the liver caused by their alcoholism.
