Addiction is a disease that can manifest itself in different ways such as gambling, sex, alcohol, drugs, cutting, and many more different ways. Addiction effect one out of ten people over the age of 12 (Drug Free Kids, 2010 & The Science of Addiction, 2017). Addictions to drugs include but are not limited to over use of prescriptions, illegal substances and alcohol. Addictions can affect many different people regardless of age, social class, educations, race, or ethnicity. Drugs don’t just affect the people taking them but they affect everyone around the person as well. Addictions aid people in doing things they normally would not do if they had not had the drugs, or an addiction to the drugs. This addiction makes not only their brain crave the drug but their body as well. Drugs do not make people commit crimes but it clouds the mind into not seeing what they are doing as a problem because it ends with them having more drugs or money to buy the drugs.
Many addicts have records related to their drug habits, as seen in Frarabee, Joshi, & Anglins 50-80% of all arrests that happen in the US are positive for illicit drugs. About 43.7 percent who have addictions report having a specialization in crime area, 25.5 percent report only committing predatory crimes and 18.2 percent report only committing victimless crimes (Frarabee et al., 2001). Specialization crime means they specialize in one time of criminal act. Predatory crime is usually when there is a victim, like in a robbery.…
