Working With Addictive Behaviours – Learning Outcome 1
This Essay will be an investigation of 3 current organisational services for addiction, in Ayrshire. For each of these organisations I will investigate the roles of Rehabilitation, Support and Preventative Services. I will then compare and contrast the current approaches used by each of these organisations in their treatment of addiction.

Abbeycare Foundation are a private sector residential rehabilitation provider for people addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. Abbeycare promote abstinence based recovery.

Clinical treatment packages are delivered by the Community Addiction Team (CAT) and the Primary Care Addiction Team (PCAT) to support individuals who are experiencing alcohol and drug problems. North Ayrshire Addiction Service considers how addiction affects everyone and not just people who are dependant. Their Vision is that ‘The harmful effects of alcohol and drug misuse in North Ayrshire are reduced '.

The roles of Rehabilitation, Support and Preventative Services in North Ayrshire Addiction Service.
• Rehabilitation: - North Ayrshire Addiction Service provides individual counselling, detox, substitute medication, group workshops.
• Support: - North Ayrshire Addiction Service provides blood borne virus information and occupational therapy support. They also provide support with planning lifestyle changes which could help someone’s recovery.
• Preventative Services: - North Ayrshire Addiction Service provides harm reduction and relapse prevention strategies. They also provide education for children and young people.
North Ayrshire Addiction Service will accept self-referrals or referrals from other council services, GP’s, Social Workers or family …show more content…
Abstinence and Harm Reduction both equally help addicts to manage their use of a substance and improve their health and quality of living. As we can see from the research into the 3 different organisations, they all use similar treatment/rehabilitation methods such as 121 counselling or group counselling, regardless of whether the desired outcome is Abstinence or Harm Reduction. Both strategies require incredible support in the guises of aftercare groups or support from friends and family
