Violent Video Games Cause Aggression

Have you ever noticed that people who play video games frequently tend to be aggressive in their behavior? Video games have become increasingly popular in this technological world. However, these video games contain massive amounts of violence resulting in aggressive behavior and addiction. It has been scientifically proven that younger kids who play violent video games express more aggressive behavior than the kids who don’t play those games. Video games cause aggression/addiction in the younger generation, influence the player’s minds, and all of these things can be prevented. Video games cause addiction in young adults and children which also cause negative side effects. As stated by Laura Finley, “The negative effects of playing violent video games can accumulate over time, suggests a study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, as researchers found that people who played a violent video game for three consecutive days showed increases in aggressive behavior and hostile expectations each day they played.” Many tests and experiments have been conducted and the results state that over time, video games cause addiction. In addition, Laura Finley explains, “In 2006, three psychologists published a study showing that exposure to violence in video games results in a lack of empathy in response to incidences of violence in real life.” This shows how these video games cause the player to display a lack of empathy towards violence. Video games result in aggressive and unacceptable behavior. As Greg Toppo describes, “After playing a violent video game, we found that people expect others to behave aggressively. That expectation may make them more defensive and more likely to respond with aggression themselves." Since, players play these video games for long periods of time, their brain remains in full attack mode like their character in the violent video game. Even though videos games can be violent, there are other alternatives. As Lee states, “ But no video game, no matter how innocuous, can compare with the positive benefits of literature, art, sport, or social interaction and the unhappy truth is that all too often, long hours of play logged in front of a video screen become a substitute for engaging in any of these other, more meaningful human pursuits.” Even though video games can be fun there is nothing better than the benefits of reading, exercising and socializing with others. Playing video games does more bad than good. “In a perfect world, video games would only be used for positive educational and social ends,” stated by Lee shows how although video games are violent and cause aggression, if used for the right thing, they can actually be beneficial to our society and our world. There’s always some other activity that can be done rather than constantly playing violent video games. As Anderson states, “Although there is a national rating-system in place to help prevent children from gaining access to games with mature content, most retailers do not have a policy of checking ID or otherwise controlling the sales of these games to minors.” The easy access of these violent games contribute to an increasing number of aggressive adolescents.
