Many people know someone who has an addiction. Addictions are tricky primarily because the person who is addicted knows the dangers of their addiction, but still have an irresistible desire for the thing they are addicted to. There are endless subjects of addiction. Many addictions begin after the particular substance is used for the first time. Users typically find their first time enjoyable. Users may attempt many times following the first, but will never experience the same satisfaction they got to begin with. This is how many addictions begin. People often perform these actions repeatedly, developing a tolerance, while still hoping to achieve the feeling they got their first time. Many addictions may even be considered “enjoyable” to a certain standard. Addictions such as smoking cigarettes are considered as a stress relief to many people. This significantly reduces the urge to quit because people choose to elevate the benefits, while still overlooking the long-term effects. In a way, expectations influence behavior. If a smoker thinks “Oh, I’ll never be able to stop smoking,” they will less likely try to seek help.
Phrases such as “Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my morning coffee,” are heard everyday. Caffeine is one of the most commonly used drugs. When you hear the word “caffeine” it does not usually have a negative connotation. So many people drink coffee as part of their daily routine, that they do not realize they may have an addiction.
