Adapting To Carroll's Culture In The Movie, Life Is Beautiful

Improved Essays
I came to Carroll University understanding my own culture, but not really anyone else's culture. I have some understanding from the foreign exchange students who attended my high school. When you live in a small town with very little diversity, the rest of the world seems so far away. The world seemed like an idea, not something I could go out and see. I enjoyed knowing who my neighbors were, but living in such a small town limits your ability to learn about other cultures. This course has opened my eyes to the similarities and differences between cultures, and how some cultures that are considered primitive have a better way of dealing with situations.
It is true that we looked at culture through the lens of film music, but I learned more about culture from the book Social and Cultural Anthropology. We read the small, but informative book on our own, then discussed the chapters in our groups and as a

The movie that most stood out to me is Life is Beautiful, because it shows what the Italian culture had to go through during World War II. It is hard to understand that Italy suffered because they were apart of the Axis Powers that were attacking the Jews, Life is Beautiful humanized the citizens of Italy. The other movie that stood out was The Pianist, which is also set in World War II. This movie follows the life of a Jew, the culture that most suffered from the war. Because the Jews were not an accepted culture, because the Jews represented something that Nazi Germany did not like, they were persecuted for being who they were. These movies need to be seen, because World War II needs to be remembered, many men, women, and children died because of hatred and ignorance of a culture. George Santayana said, “those who do not learn history are condemned to repeat it.” It is important we understand that one culture, one race, is not above the others. We are all human, with different traditions and

1-a. Share the learning outcome(s) you either wrote or revised using the steps outlined in the module. One of the course objectives I used to use for Music Cultures World was “Students will be able to identify and discuss the differences and similarities among musical performances from a variety of cultural contexts.” After taking the ACUE 1A module, I decided to revise the course outcome as follows: 1) Students will be able to illustrate the connection between music and dance in African music by producing a 5-minute flash mob. 2) Students will be able to demonstrate the application of a number notation system by creating a 5-minute gamelan performance.…

Part 1: College is a great place to meet new people of all different cultures. In fact, one experience I had with an individual of another culture took place at college. During my freshman year at Towson University, I enrolled in a Biology lecture with over 150 students and I happened to sit next to, Bella, a girl who was from Italy. As the semester went on, I got to know her better and learned that she was studying abroad for a semester. Even though she spoke English fluently, she had a very strong accent and I later learned that her native language was Italian.…

This course has been very beneficial to my development as a culturally grounded social worker. There were four components that stood out to me. One thing that stood out to me was the article regarding the experiences of Vietnamese refugees. The article painted a great picture of the treatment of those who are from underrepresented populations. The feelings you described were raw and represent feelings of others who might feel uncomfortable with speaking up for themselves when they are treated properly.…

Few film directors of the modern era have had such a marked influence on their peers as the great Steven Spielberg. Before Spielberg, it was believed that a filmmaker could either be highly creative or make films that were highly profitable. Usually a person could not accomplish both feats, at least in the same film. Also, when a director created a successful film, he or she was usually stuck creating works in that genre for the rest of his or her career. Spielberg was the first person to make thrillers, romances, dramas, and science fiction movies and have successes in each genre.…

The culture I chose to differentiate is African American with Native American. Each group has had their unique languages, familial relationships, social relations, music and dance traditions; they have hatred many shared experiences over the past 400 years. African American culture intertwines with various other cultures like American and Indian. What is often referred to as the Native American population is comprised of over 500 unique tribes African American people in America are about 12% of the population or roughly 40 million people (Jacob 2015). African Americans brought with them musical instruments, intricate rhythms, and unique song styles that sometimes influence pop music.…

Looking at the three films that covered some degree of adapting or questioned culture and changes in the norm. I was able to see the full depth of transition and cultural identity that Japan had at the moment. Through these three movies and especially the ones set during World war two I was able to see the Japan trying to grow to fit a new world with new ideas and standards. It was also clear to see the different expectations and realities that all the different players were seeing or working with. Starting off looking at Hiroshima and a Bridge to the Sun, both of these films really led me to see a Japan that was holding on to its traditions and values while failing to see how it was hurting itself.…

Ida When I saw “Ida” on the list of films we could watch I became incredibly excited and knew that was a the one I would choose. When the film came out I thought it seemed interesting and I really wanted to see it, however I never had the time. I'm really glad I waited to watch the movie until the end of the semester here because I'm a lot more culturally aware of what it was like for those in Europe and specifically Eastern Europe to experience the Holocaust and the communist regime. I even feel more connected to the film because of the trip some of us took to Poland. Going to Krakow was an amazing experience I will never forget, I went to jazz clubs while there and was satisfied to see that Ida also went to jazz clubs.…

An understanding of Asian culture can positively impact my 21st-century life. For example, being an African American girl in the United States of America I believe it is important to be sympathetic and understanding of other people’s culture and where they came from. Especially since this country is sometimes referred to as a melting pot I’m going to meet different people than myself every day and that includes Asian Americans. For example, I used to work at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and a lot of the college program kids were from Asian countries like Hong Kong and China.…

To show this, Roberto Benigni, director and writer of the Italian film Life is Beautiful, sets his film during the time of historical Holocaust. Throughout the film he takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster from landing the girl, to having a family, and being taken to a concentration camp. Binigni uses multiple objects to give the plot more meaning and displays his artistry as a filmmaker. To begin, I want to say I find this course insightful. Through the weeks, I have come to accept that everyone has unconscious bias, but also, that it is not something to be ashamed of, if anything, it is something to learn from. Before this class, I was not sure how to articulate my experiences on cultural differences. Also, I did not have a good grasp on culture and how it affects us all differently. I have learned to recognize that I have my own ethnocentrism, that it is okay to feel proud of my own culture in the sense that, maybe there are other ways to do things, but I like my way better because that is the way I am accustomed to.…
