Majority of the Banksia plant species live in areas prone to bushfires. Therefore this plant has adapted and developed ways to overcome the threat of bushfires. Some banksias do not shed their seeds unless there is a fire, this makes it difficult to access the seeds. However as the flames reach the branches, the intense heat causes the capsules to open. By releasing their seeds only in the wake of a fire, the banksias ensure that they will fall on well-cleaned, brightly-lit ground that has been recently fertilised with ash so that they can grow into a new banksia in a short amount of time.
