Other than the fable about Adam's missing rib, I find the same scripture (Genesis 2:21) about Eve being made from Adam's rib to be allegorical rather than literal. To me it represents God's intent that women should be at man's side, to be a helpmeet, as the Bible says. I became convinced of this when I learned men and women have exactly the same number of ribs, because I heard the same story. It exploded everything I thought I knew about the Creation. Then I started doing more reading and learned there is another story about Adam from the Babylonian Talmud that records that Adam had a previous wife created for him named, Lilith, who refused any authority of Adam and also rebelled against God and Adam and refused to tend the Garden
