Before the attack on pearl harbour, Adam was passive and will obey anyone's orders. He wouldn't make any decisions by himself and rely on other people. This is proved in Pg.52 when an officer told him to row a boat assuming he is another officer, Adam does as he says without objecting and rows the boat to the West Virginia as he tells him. In comparison, Adam after the book is less passive and has confidence in making his own decisions.
