Adam Wyatt: A Short Story

Sirens could be heard while Adam Wyatt went in and out of consciousness. He looked up to see lights from the inside of the ambulance. He felt his body swaying left and right to the fast movement of the ride. He knew that if this was it, he would expect any minute to see his life flashing before his eyes. The oxygen mask the paramedics put on his face was starting to chafe but he couldn’t get his hand up to remove it. He wanted to cry but didn’t even have the strength for that.
Adam could see the woman paramedic asking questions but couldn’t hear her. He knew he had to focus. He thought about his world, which consisted of his wife and children. “My family… My family needs me,” he murmured.

Adam looked at his daughter coming down the stairs knowing this would not be easy. Tina was not a morning person and she showed that fact in her early childhood. She is now eleven years old and he realized how much she was like him. Stubborn. “Come on and grab your back pack. I need to get you to school and head to the construction site.” Adam commanded. He walked into the kitchen to grab his lunch from its usual spot on the counter next to the stove. The normal routine Adam thought as he walked over to where his wife Tammy stood washing the morning dishes in the sink. He put his hand on her shoulder and gave her a kiss goodbye. “Love you.” “Love you, too,” Tammy replied and went back to the morning dishes. She listened to the commotion from the living room that happened every week day at about 7:30 in the morning. She shook her head and laughed. In a few minutes she would have the house to herself and it will be quiet. The kids will be at school and the husband will be at work she thought. “Come on, Brat, you do this every morning. Let’s go!” spat Jason as he clomped down the stairs with his own backpack bouncing off his back and headed out of the front
