Compare and Contrast Argument Essay Adam sheppard and Christopher McCandless are two men who set out in a journey tho for different purposes, both journeys had a meaning to them. Adam shepard's journey is to disprove the point that the American dream is dead by literally starting at the bottom from living in a homeless shelter to getting a stable job a place to live and have some money saved up. On the other hand Christopher McCandless was on a journey to find happiness for himself and help the people that he meet along the way pursue their dreams and achieve their own happiness. His belief in self reliance is what lead him to do most of the things he did and eventually to his death. Sheppard on the other hand wanted to use as much help as he could to achieve is goal. In the article The death of an innocent, the author expresses that “ . His education had been paid for by a college fund established by his parents; there was some $20,000 in this account at the time of his graduation, money his parents thought he intended to use for law school. Instead, he donated the entire sum to the Oxford Famine Relief Fund. Then, without notifying any friends or family members, he loaded all his belongings into a decrepit yellow Datsun and headed west without itinerary, relieved to shed a life of abstraction and security, a life he felt was removed from the heat and throb of the real world. Chris McCandless intended to invent a new life for himself, one in which he would be free to wallow in unfiltered experience.” This demonstrated part of McCandless’s act that shows he waned to rely on himself instead of any other people or money. Somewhere along the way his car broke down and that's when the real journey started when he ditched his car and burned the rest of money he had left to start a real self reliance life.
