The physical transformation Adam undertook throughout the duration of his journey is over, but he demonstrates how his life has been forever changed because of his encounters. After a year Shepard begins to write an Epilogue, in which he does a self-reflection and his time spent in Charleston, South Carolina. In his writing he acknowledges the fact that he has exceeded his own material expectations: the operable automobile, furnished apartment, $2,500 cash, and a position that he could improve and keep stepping forward on a successful path. I would have to agree with him to a certain extent. I was raised by a smart, ambitious mother and a hardworking father. I have been raised that way and I have lived to meet those expectations. I am currently employed at a local equine stable and I cannot explain how many times my boss has said, “You are the hardest worker she’s ever seen.” Every time I give the same response, “I get that from my dad.” Most of my parents friends that know I am President of the student body, FFA, and National Honor Society say, “You are such a go getter and so smart!” Every time I give the same response, “I get that from my mom.” In many way I am a product of the environment I was raised in, but my dad’s experience was not quite the same. My dad was raised in a home with a father who drank a bit too much and a kind hearted, loving mother. He watched his dad spend the family’s money on beer and liquor instead of putting it into a savings account or spending it on their weekly groceries and watched his mom take up small jobs like baking and sewing to buy the essentials. My father will contest that he did not have a bad childhood, but most people would agree that a home situation like that would not be ideal. I do, however, believe it effected the way I was raised. To this day I have never seen my father take a swig of any type of alcohol. I’ve never had to hear my dad stumble in the door at 2 o’clock in morning, because he was too drunk to drive home from the bar.
