Tenacity is defined as the quality of being determined. In the novel, The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun, the narrator and main character, Adam, was set on finding his life purpose and pursuing the dream of helping poor children in other countries who had little hope for the future. His family went through a great deal of pain. His father taught him to be tough and always said to him “Braun’s are different” (Braun Pg. 7) I have never been a straight A student, but I also have never failed a class. Ever since I could remember, I have wanted to pursue a career in Medicine. When the time came to start my journey into becoming a doctor, I was applying for college, taking the SAT & the ACT, and stressing over admission essays. They were always there for no matter what, despite of the path I wanted to take, helping me through all the ups and downs that came from taking the next step in my life. College, as most would agree is not easy. However, it is not about finding a job or studying something that will make you economically stable once you graduate. It is about finding the person you really want to become, the person you are meant to be. After reading such an amazing story of how a simple college student was able to change a small piece of the world really inspired me, I too want to do more than just go to school and earn my credits. As a very introverted person, standing out and being part of large groups of people has never been my strong suit. I no longer want to go by unnoticed. I want to do something big, not just for self satisfaction but for the good of others, in my community or even the world.
